As New Town and Ridgewood grew, amenities appeared. As life centralised, these dwindled. Some steep slopes and steps and semi-secret passages link the remnants of industries and services amid the houses. Rural stretches and countryside views included.

COUNTRY ESTATES TO HOUSING ESTATES

Rocks Park and Buxted Park belonged to big landowners, until much of their land was built over. Centuries of life have left traces as we pass through the late 20th century housing. The Streatfeild family, water power, parish boundaries, justice, religion and prehistory all feature. Includes some steep steps.
